Konditor and Cook: Borough Food Market at London Bridge

I hope you like cake; because I definitely do…

GERMAN FRUIT CHEESECAKE:

Borough food market

Look at that shiny, creamy cheesecake-y luxuriousness…silky, or what?

Say hi.

On a sizzling, summer afternoon during the working week of London, Borough food market is definitely the place to be…

Overlooked by the shard and a stone’s throw from London Bridge station, Borough food market is a bustling little district of its own, jam-packed with fresh merchants of cheese, bbq, fresh meat, giant cookies, fresh fruit and cakes…

Though given my time limit, I just had to focus on the cake side of things…

The cake stall owners didn’t seem to mind me clicking away at their stalls. Although I asked for their permission, I felt bad for just using them for the photos, so I bought a couple of things to ‘pay’ for my pictures. I was hardly reluctant; after all, this is cheesecake in question – caramel apple cheesecake (Ion Patisserie)

I had to stop somewhere. I went for the caramel apple cheescake because it felt like an acceptable compromise between apple pie and cheesecake – both of which I was craving.

There are simply no words…

I saw some of the huge brownies last time from Ion last time that I visited. But I just remember it being so huge, rich, fudgey and dense that even I wasn’t able to finish it…so round 2 was a chance to try something new…

However, the second little gem of the day turned out to be Konditor and Cook…Which is basically a cute little cake parlour on the edge of borough market; a convenient refuge for days when you simply cannot decide what to buy from the market, whilst also being so close that you can head back straight over for a 2nd attempt at tackling the crippling indecision…

Has anyone ever been to Borough market before? I’m becoming more and more fond of food markets as the days go by! I simply can’t wait to go back and for selection round 2!

Konditor and Cook is a twist of elegance combined with minimalism and pure comfort; all at the same time. With a small, simple, and cutesy-decorated interior – the emphasis is designed to be on the dense piles of deliciousness and frosting all along the counter…

The pictures say it all. The staff were lovely and patient too. Every other customer who came into the shop seemed to know exactly what they wanted; but I can’t pull off that kind of swiftness…though I guess deliberation following impulsive choices is the key to food blogging?

I got the lemon chiffon cake ( because the icing was impossible to turn away), which was delicious, sweet and satisfyingly creamy. Neither too light, nor dense. Rather, they were just right – just as sponge cakes should be.

I also got one of the mini £1 slices because the icing on it also looked way to good to snub. It was like a butter cream and toffee version of nutella. Extreme sweetness is combined with rich chocolate here; you decide whether or not it is your thing.

I couldn’t make up my mind about it. But then again, I had just switched from being fixated with white butter cream and lemon…

Over all, I really enjoyed Konditor and Cook. I usually have to try fairly hard to find a decent bakery/cake shop which just sells comforting squares of fudgey-ness and good frosting, so it was nice to have just found it by e icing chance (or accidentally on purpose?) – Either way.

I definitely got more than I bargained for when I rolled up at borough food market on a sunny Wednesday afternoon…Konditor and Cook is simply irresistible; from the swirly curly whirly brownies, to the £1 treat of the day…to the bite sized Victoria sponge/jam scone. The stalls have some decent competition, what you actually settle for will really depend on your mood…

So, cheesecake, cake or, a cheeky, ‘slice-sized’ bite of both?

Just do it. You know you want to.
